Chapter Twenty

As we fly back to the castle, I catch a glimpse of the crescent moon hanging in the starlit sky. Drew sits next to me with his hand on my thigh as Tucker whispers something to my little metallic castle who is buckled into the swiveling co-pilot chair.

I lean my head on my fire dragon’s bicep, and I’m thankful that he chose to be with me. Drew gave up ever becoming the Darrington Boss so we could continue our lives together. He chose me over ruling his own family.

Well, he’s not getting out of ruling that easily. Once my men become my lords, they’re going to help me rule. Whether they like it or not.

The buzz of my cell phone cuts through the steady hum of the whirring helicopter blades as we fly over the Northern Sea route.

I take my phone out of my pocket and look at the caller ID. It’s Brett.

“Yeah, what’s new?” I ask as Drew blinks the sleep from his eyes.

“The final pieces of the orb are all matched. All we need now is for you to use your magic glue, Boss.”

A chuckle bubbles from my lips. “Good to know. Thanks for working on that while we were gone.”

“Anytime, Boss,” Brett replies.

“Good-bye, Brett. We will see you soon.” I disconnect the call and put my phone back in my jacket pocket.

Drew sticks his arms up over his head and stretches them while he yawns loudly, making Ashgrave’s wings flutter.

“Sorry for disturbing you, Ashgrave.” Drew looks up toward the nose of the chopper at the steampunk dragon who rolls his brass eyes at my fire dragon before closing them again.

“Brett and Jade matched up all the orb pieces,” I tell Tucker and Drew. “All I have to do is fuse them together and the orb will be complete.”

“About damn time,” Tucker says. “Then we can all become lords. That’ll be better than being a Boss, won’t it Drew?”

My fire dragon lets out a deep chuckle. “I totally agree with you, Tucker. All of the fun and none of the responsibility.” He takes my hand in his and kisses each of my fingertips.

“Hold on a minute.” I turn in my seat and adjust my headset. “You guys are going to be bound to me forever, through my magic and soul.”

Drew pulls one lip up in a smirk. “And… that’s supposed to be a bad thing?”

“Don’t think that you guys won’t have more responsibilities once you become lords.” I grin. “We will run our kingdom, not just me. We’re all going to be responsible for the care and safety of our people. We’re a team.”

“A family.” Drew grabs my hand and kisses it. “A chosen family.”

“The best kind of family is the one you choose to be in,” Tucker says over our headsets and reaches out to touch the little metal dragon next to him.

My heart beats in a happy rhythm at the thought of us becoming a real family. Me, my men, my castle, Irena, Flynn, Jade, and Brett.
